Physical Education/Health Department

Department/Program Description

Health courses are designed to disseminate knowledge about the many topics of health and healthy living. Today we face health challenges individually as well as a society. Introductory courses meet each student's diverse needs in a variety of course offerings and delivery methods. Classes deal with personal and community health issues, discovering one's wellness, exploring nutrition issues, and examining chemical awareness. Some courses impart advanced skills and knowledge for emergency care professions as well as the lay rescuer in an emergency situation. Health courses provide relevant information for managing personal health needs and choices.

The courses in Physical Education emphasize life-time activities. Classes are co-educational and provide opportunities to advance one's knowledge level as well as fitness levels. Some of the classes will challenge you to explore new activities and new adventures. The schedule affords students an opportunity to have season-oriented activities that make use of our facilities and those within the community. The variety of courses and how they are offered are designed to meet the diverse interests and needs of our student population.

Varsity sports provide intercollegiate athletic competition to further one's competitive abilities and desires. Students can take a credit for varsity athletic team participation. Individuals must meet NJCAA eligibility requirements.

Transfer and Employment Opportunities

All Health and Activity classes transfer as electives to all MNSCU institutions and most four-year colleges.

Employment opportunities range from sports officials, sports administration, physical education teachers, coaches, sports facility managers, personal trainers, corporate fitness instructors, activities directors, fitness instructors, cruise recreation directors, camp directors, health club managers, and athletics at a higher level. Some students elect to further their education to obtain a bachelors or masters degree to enhance employability.

Some examples of health-related careers are:  dietitian, sports nutrition, health educator, health unit coordinator, health science librarian, health information administrator, Emergency Medical Technician, etc.  Some of these careers may require additional schooling and bachelor's degrees.
