College Lab Assistant I - Theatre
Part-time Intermittent
Under limited supervision, performs technical work within a college theater: assisting in producing productions; daily activities of stage systems and scene shop maintenance; monitors and assists in carrying out assignments from the producer; work closely with director and students. Positions in this class are optionalized according to the specific academic program for which the lab (theater)exists.
Ensures sufficient quantities of supplies and equipment are available so that experiments and demonstrations can be properly conducted by regularly inventorying supplies and equipment on hand and informing the supervisor of needed items to be ordered. Prepares the physical layout so that supplies and equipment are ready. This is done by discussing with instructors the requirements for each set-up, preparing or overseeing the set preparation, setting out special equipment and cleaning up. Assigns student workers to quarterly work schedules, determines work assignments and evaluates their effectiveness to ensure that all routine maintenance needs of the theater are met. Monitors student progress as requested by faculty by proctoring and scoring placement and progress tests, observing students' work. Performs repair and maintenance of equipment to ensure that it is fully operational and safe to use by regularly conducting tests of the working condition of the equipment, makes minor repairs, and orders major repair service from vendors. Oversees the security of the theater so that equipment and materials are used properly and kept safe by verifying the presence of equipment, keeping records of equipment used, monitoring consumption of supplies, protecting equipment and supplies from use by unauthorized persons, implementing procedures which provide for the security of the theater.
Responsibilities: This position exists to assist students in the theater arts program with the development of related competencies; prepare and maintain the theater setting; and assist the director with major productions and evaluations.
· Under the direction of the instructor, demonstrate and assist students in the preparation and maintenance of the theater/lab
· Provide inventory control and shop maintenance
· Assist instructor with student evaluations
Minimum Qualifications: Post-secondary coursework in Theater Arts sufficient to provide technical services
OR
6 months of teaching/tutoring experience in Theater Arts at the high school level or above
OR
An equivalent combination of education and work experience
