Spring Break Trip

     The HCC Cardinals Baseball Team opend their spring trip with a pair of losses.  Playing mostly Division I (full scholarship) NJCAA Baseball Teams in Mississippi will be a daunting task and an enlightening road trip.

     On Sunday, March 7 the Cardinals lost 0-18 and 0-10 to Pearl River CC.  Nick Moran had the Cardinals lone hit.  Matt ERickson took the loss giving up 10 runs (8 earned) with 1 strike-out .  Chris Novotony pitched 3 2/3 innings giving up 8 runs (4 earned) with 2 strike-outs.  In game 2 Dustin Pleshe had a double, the only Cardinal hit.  Aaron Kritz took the pitching loss going 3 innings and giving up 7 runs (5 earned).  Pleshe took the mound and gave up 3 runs.

     On Monday, March 8 the Cardinals faced Copiah-Lincoln CC and lost 0-21 and 2-10.  In game 1 Devin Delcih and Nick Moran each had one hit.  Tim Nylund took the pitching loss giving up 13 runs (8 earned) and 7 hits.  Brian Collins pitched 2 innings givining up 8 runs (5 earned) and 8 hits with 1 strike-out.  Evan Hauta tossed one shutout inning.  In game 2 Matt ERickson had one hit and 1 RBI.  Hauta had a double and 1 RBI.  Delich took the pitching loss giving up 6 runs (4 earned) and 6 hits with 1 strike-out.  Ben Tibbets went 1 1/3 innings on the mound giving up 14 earned runs on 9 hits with 1 strike-out.

   The Cardinals were rained out on Tuesday versus Jones County CC.

   On Wednesday, March 10, the Cardials faced Bishop State Cc and lost 0-11 and 2-14.  Dustin Pleshe had the lone Cardinal hit in game 1 in the 5th inning.  The Bishop State pitcher has been drafted in the 10th round of MLB last year.  Aaron Kritz took the pitching loss allowing 7 hits and 11 runs only 2 of which were earned.  In game 2, Nick Moran and Tim Nylund each had 1 hit and 1 RBI.   

   On Thursday, the Cardinals faced Eastern Mississippi CC and lost 0-6, 2-17.  Chris Novotony was the losing pitcher in game 1.  He went 6 innings and allowed 9 hits with 3 strike-outs.  Aaron Kritz, Ben Tibbetts, and Tim Mylund all had singles for the Cards.  In game 2, DUtin Pleshe took the pitching loss.  Kritz and Pleshe eahc had hits and Travis Norman had 1 RBI.

    On Friday, the Cardinals lost to Eastern Mississippi CC 3-6 and 0-21.  In game 1 Matt Erickson started on the mound and pitched four innings, taking the loss.  He gave up 5 runs (1 earned), struck out 3, had 2 walks, and allowed 3 hits.  Brad Skurich pitched the last two innings allowing 2 hits and one earned run.  He struck out 2 batters.   Nick Moran had 2 hits including a triple and drove in 2 runs.  Devin Delich had 1 hit and 1 RBI.  In game 2, the Cardinals played Jones County CC from Ellisville, MS and lost 0-21.  Hibbing did not get a hit.  Tim Nylund started on the mound and took the loss.  He gave up 2 hits and 4 runs and walked 4 batters.  Moran came on in relief and allowed 10 runs (4 earned) on 3 hits with 4 walks.  Brain Collins finished the game on the mound allowing 9 hits and 7 runs (3 earned) strijking out 2 and walking 2.

   On Saturday, the Cardinals finished their road trip with two losses to East Central Mississippi CC.  In game 1 the Cards lost 0-14.  Dustin Pleshe, Evan Jauta, Ben Tibbets and Brad Skurich each had 1 hit.  Hauta started on the mound and took the loss allowing 5 urns (2 earned) on 2 hits.  Devin Delich allowed 7 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits and 1 strike-out.  Darrin Pleshe gave up 2 runs (0 earned) on 1 hit.  in game 2, the Cardinals were defeated 0-12.  Tim Nylund and Darrin Pleshe had the lone Cardinal hits.  Chris Novotony took the pitching loss going 3 innings and giving up 4 runs on 4 hits.  Aaron Kritz allowed 8 runs on 8 hits.

   Coach Turnbull was pleased with the efforts of his young squad.  "They learned from their mistakes.  We did a good job of putting the ball in play and we hit better than other spring trips.  We should be competitive when we start playing Northern Division teams."

   The Cardinals will return to action on March 27-28 when they travel to Council Bluffs, IA to take on Western Iowa CC. 

NEW TEAM

      The 2010 Cardinals Baseball Team will have a lot of new faces.  There are only two sophomores on the squad and only one played for the Cardinals last year.  Tyler Chrysler is the lone returning Cardinal from last season.  He is a catcher and outfielder from Hibbing.  Aaron Kritz is a sophomore transfer from Mesabi Range CC.  He saw limited action as a pitcher there last season.  Aaron played for Chisholm High School.

     Freshman for 2010 are: Nick Moran, a shortstop/pitcher from Denfeld High School, Devin Delich, a second baseman and pitcher from Denfeld High School, Tyler Monson a centerfielder from Babbitt-Embarras High School, Evan Jauta, an infielder from Cook High School, Travis Norman a catcher/outfielder from Denfeld High School, Chris Novotony, an outfielder from McGregor High School, Ben Tibbetts and outfielder from Cook High School, Brad Skurich, a firstbaseman/pitcher from Denfeld High School, Matt ERickson, a firstbaseman/outfielder from Hibbing High School, Darrin Pleshe, an outfielder from Nashwauk-Keewatin High School, Brian Collins, a thirdbaseman from Aitkin High School, Tim Nylund, a catcher/pitcher/utility player from Proctor high School, and Dustin Pleshe, a catcher/infielder/pitcher from Nashwauk-Keewatin High School.
